Soooooooo Internet at the residencia has been TERRIBLE! It has been extremely hard to keep this thing up to date when 400 millions high schoolers are constantly on facebook…..oops I said it. There are a lot of high schoolers here taking two weeks worth of courses and its unfortunate because all they do is scream and party. ANYWHO.
I had thee coolest experience Monday night. I had the opportunity to perform at the open mic night with my good friend Erin Wirth! The open mic started at 11:00 and went until around 1! We got there around 9:30 so we could practice and maybe get some extra time just jammin but we ended up not being able to practice until 10:30!! And then last minute I was asked to play Someone Like You on the piano for one of the girls in my group. It was CRAY. Good thing me and my housemates played that everyday…. ;) Anyways, it was so good!! I harmonized with Erin to White Blank Page by Mumford and then she sang two of her original songs. Let me tell you. It was SO GOOD to be able to play guitar and piano again. I miss it SO MUCH. Erin and I are going to go see if we can just mess around with the instruments tonight for fun.
We went to Portugal this last weekend and I have to tell you how great it was to surd again. I was super unsure about surfing in unfamiliar waters but YOLO and when would I ever have a chance to surf in Portugal again?? So Erin and I suited up and braved the waves. I am SO glad we did. It was thee BEST. I’ve decided I want to move somewhere where I can surf everyday and live in my swim suit. (that probably won’t happen) I can dream right?
Classes are going well. I learned how to salsa dance! (yay!) I am a terrible dancer so I was pumped to get some moves in me. If you are ever on the dance floor with me WATCH OUT. I am currently in a 4 day cooking class. I am learning how to cook all the Spanish classics. Hoping to cook up a good spanish meal for those who want it. Other classes have been good. My teacher Inma has been hilarious. The other day she was doing her classic point and stare and hope you answer correctly method. I guess she was going around asking everyone the same question and when it got to me I didn’t know what to say BECAUSE I was being reading the dictionary and being studious. Anyways she laughed and said something and I just laughed a lot with her nodded my head and she moved on. LITTLE DID I KNOW she told the class she wanted to throw me out of the window. So that’s neat. She actually loves me though and laughs at everything I say. I love her. Also- my other teacher asked me to sing a spanish song for her that I had never heard before. She heard me sing once in the hallway and has been trying to get me to sing ever since then. I laughed and quickly said no to her request and she continued to ask me. The thing is-she doesn’t understand that it is impossible for me to sing in Spanish. Especially when I have never heard the song. WOOPS. Maybe at the end of the program.
Well I am off to my 5:00 class! Miss you all so much! Shout out to mi famila, FINN and my 115 ladies. HASTA LUEGO
I thought I would make a quick list of things that happened today.
There is a woman here in Spain that has terrible trouble walking. She has to walk with a cane and both legs are very very weak. I am not positive exactly what she has but I must say, I have been humbled. As I attempted to walk next to her, I found myself having to stop very frequently so that I wasn’t ahead of her. As we were walking to lunch, I couldn’t help but thank God for my health. This is something I think I take for granted a lot. I think the reason why this hit me so hard is because I have no idea what I would do if I couldn’t walk/run normally. Running is something that I am incredibly passionate about. This woman still has so much joy despite her circumstances. I am thankful for the interaction I had with her today.
The rest of my list consists of really random items.
In my 5:00 conversation class there is this wonderful friend I made. She is also in my classes in the morning. Her name is Marelena. Marelena is from Italy and she is HILARIOUS. During conversation class she was telling the legend of tortellini. For those of you who know me. I am only SLIGHTLY obsessed with tortellini. Unfortunately, the legend was not a good one. We have to speak completely in Spanish and since she is a beginner as well, it was hard to understand her. After she was done I asked her to repeat it in english. She told me the legend was that there was this beautiful woman who had a belly button. I know right? A BELLY BUTTON. I was like okay…. that isn’t unusual but like… what does that have to do with my favorite food… she continues to tell us that the shape of her belly button was used as a model for tortellini. My heart sank. I will never EVER look at tortellini the same. Cheers to belly buttons.
After class, I wanted to roam the streets of Salamanca and explore a bit. Marelena asked me where I was going and I said I didn’t know but that I just wanted to peruse the streets. She persisted that I come with her and walk together. I am so glad I said yes. We shopped around and chatted quite a bit in spanish. (YAY) While we were walking, I felt a raindrop. I looked up and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I asked Marelena if she felt it and she proceeded to say, “Oh no! It was bird poop not rain.” I started laughing uncontrollably and she got her hand sanitizer and napkins out of her bag and started rubbing it all over my head even though it was just right by my forehead. It’s okay though. She told me it’s good luck to have a bird poop on you. SCORE.
During our excursion we went to the grocery store. Believe it or not-LOVE ON TOP was playing. That’s right. MUH GIRL BEE-YAWN-CE. Of course I sang along. Everyone looked. I didn’t care. I am having HUGE with drawls from any and all kind of music. It is actually really sad. No one sings here. No one whistles, which is a bummer because it’s my new thing! I am just starting not to care if people stare while tunes come out of my mouth. I can’t help it. Most of the time I don’t even know I’m doing it until someone WHIPS their head around and growls at me. No worries though. I decided today that I would sing and play music as loud as I want despite the looks I get. So right now- Jenny and I are blasting Beyonce in our room and singing at the top of our lungs. Thanks Beyonce. You da best.
Okay. That’s all for now! Heading to the track! One of my FAVORITE parts of the day! Running here is the best. It is SO beautiful! LOVE YOU ALL!!!!! :)
